In Praise of the Literary Ladies of Medium
It’s a big year for women on Medium. Five writers that I found here and am devoted to have published books. It’s thrilling inspiration for the rest of us — I’m going to be pitching my ass off this spring. In the meantime, read them.
Abby’s book, Ask Me About My Uterus, was recently released and is getting stellar reviews in amazing places. NYT! The New Republic! Bustle! Lots more! I’m currently reading it and am completely absorbed. I’ve loved Abby’s writing since I joined Medium — she’s a great storyteller and offers a brilliant and powerful voice for women’s health.
The first time I read Kristi, it was this, and it floored me -
Girl Skulks Into a Room
I am not a joiner. Worse — I’m a leaver. I love that rush of front-porch vacuum quiet when the door to a party has shut…
I’ve been hooked ever since, she’s so so so good. I wasn’t a bit surprised when “Enjoli” went viral. Now, she has a book coming out, Nothing Good Can Come of This, a collection of essays and I’m impatient. It’s in the cart, out in August.
Stephanie’s book, Everything is Horrible and Wonderful, about the heart-wrenching loss of her brilliant brother, is out and it’s next on my list. She’s funny and smart and human and I’ve loved all of her Medium stuff. The gushy reviews promise that you’ll feel all the feelings. Her politics are badass, too.
Kimberly is funny and profane and political and sharp and just plain right. I’ve enjoyed her presence on Medium immensely and can’t wait for her book of essays, Amateur Hour. It comes out in May.
I found Veronica here, as well, and now we are friends and fellow editors at daCunha. She has written a lovely, lyrical collection of short fiction, Benedicta Takes Wing. Fans of short stories will love her exploration of the inner lives of Filipino families, a journey to the ordinary, extraordinary heart of each of us.
I found each of these spectacular women here and am thrilled to see that they’ve made hay. I’m inspired and excited and wish them all the best. Medium is lucky to have them around.
I’m sure I’m missing someone else who is publishing/has published — pile on!
A note: I’ve linked each book to Amazon. I know that Amazon is evil, that Jeff Bezos is an asshat monster eating the world. I’m sorry. It’s easy. I’m lazy. Read the descriptions and the reviews there, and then go to Charlotte’s Books on the corner, or whatever, and buy buy buy. Or click Buy Now from your bed with a bowl of ice cream, no judgement. I still do, even knowing what I know. Revolution in increments.
