“When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.” Sinclair Lewis
They say we should call and I do. They say write, and I do. I sign petitions. I read and I fill my brain with what we should do. What we should not do.
They say VOTE and I do.
These things only work in a functioning democracy, however. These things are not effective in the presence of criminal malfeasance. Voting doesn’t work in the face of foreign meddling, aggressive voter suppression, and manipulative gerrymandering. We have been robbed of our vote.
Democracy is circling the drain.
We cried, “Constitutional crisis!” before the inauguration. We marched and screamed after. Women rose up in defiance all over the world, decrying the abusive misogynist at the helm. We cried, “Shame!” in Charlottesville. We collectively convulsed over the continued neglect of Puerto Rico.
We’ve had faux Christianity and sham patriotism rammed down our throats, the crosses and the flags of fascists, devils in sheeps’ clothing. We have handed our country to a crime family and we have a complicit Congress shielding and supporting them, clearing the way for the most egregious policies seen in generations.
We said, “This is not normal!” and “This is not my president!” We’ve watched an endless parade of hucksters, cons, villains, and criminals, on and off the national stage. We’ve been appalled and appalled again, each time by the new supposed low. The world watches in horror as we have abandoned every pretense of all things right and good.
There is, every day, a new low.
Sarah Kendzior, a writer and analyst who studies politics in authoritarian states, said this almost two years ago:
Some of the most critical and important voices right now are experts in authoritarian states. Think about that.
People who study Nazi Germany are saying, this is not how it begins. We are already past that point. Think about that.
Children are in cages. Think about that. Babies and toddlers are being detained without their mothers. Think about that, if you can.
Ivanka Trump posts public images of her well-fed billionaire babies in the face of her father’s cruel policies.
Don Jr. retweets white supremacists and ugly conspiracy theory amidst the turmoil of his own criminal investigation.
Melania Trump tells us to #BeBest while serving as the mouthpiece of the very worst. Our first lady, failing in the weakest way.
Administration toadies show up on our screens and in our feeds daily, mocking the suffering, flattering the criminals, and lying with abandon.
They say this will get worse. They say we have not reached the bottom. They tell us to look to midterms, to plan for 2020. We do not have time.
Babies are in detention. Nazis are praised. We’re drowning in lies.
How long will we do this? How much will we tolerate? What will we be lamenting in 75 years?
Who are we, really?
Think about that.
